433.10 coded patients and the GWTG registry

Hello everyone,

We were wondering how other Primary Stroke Centers deal with the 433.10 medical coded patients as far as data abstraction and the GWTG registry. These are patients that are “Ischemic Stroke without Infarctions: Occlusion and stenosis of carotid artery without cerebral infarction.”  They tend to be symptomatic carotids that end up with CEA/stenting.

These patients are required for data abstraction by Joint Commission, but because these patients are not true strokes, it doesn’t make sense to include them in the GWTG Registry. How does your institution handle this situation?

Pocahontas Memorial is a critical access hospital. We stabilize the patient and get him to a desinated stroke center as quickly as possible. At this time, we are not collecting the data that you are looking for.
